What panache from Surfer Blood – the West Palm Beach boys who took to the stage at The Music Box. They took the audience by their little hairs on their chins and started with ‘Fast Jabroni’ and moving onto ‘Take it Easy.’ Now, ‘Take it Easy’ is a slow-turning affair on the album, Astro Coast, but live, it’s a rambunctious affair with all the twist and turns we’ve all come to love about the band. Noisy, tropical and dancey can all be used in a stringed together sentence or separate – it doesn’t matter for the band who make it all seem incredibly fun and therapeutic. John Paul Pitts, singing monster/white mariachi, sported a Dodgers shirt, and he flaunted himself all about, getting to the lip of that stage and giving the crowd just the smallest chance to eat him whole, but they didn’t and the band was grateful that the sacrifice was a miss. A new song, ‘I’m Not Ready’ was deployed upon Los Angeles and it carried with it some crazy string work and maybe not enough percussions? I’m trying to remember and it’s all very much a blur, but what a blur of a time. Thank you, Surfer Blood.
