Cass McCombs - Dropping the Writ

Bearing a resemblance to Donovan, the guitar sings once again. The whisy-whasy sounds of years gone by are all too familiar in Cass McCombs Dropping The Writ, which starts off with a bang and sort of lists its way to ballad land. McCombs guitar–riddled lyrics have a nature that calls for simplicity in a time of hyperactive drum machines and pink leotards. McCombs takes the minimalist approach to his music. More energy comes to bat with the track “Lionkiller,” but the rest of the album either borrows from Donovan or mimics what Cat Stevens was doing in his earlier work. McCombs can take credit for all the lyrics and it shows, because what Domino Records has on its hands is an honest to goodness songwriter.
